AlaÁa H¸y¸k is situated about 20 miles (32 km) from Hattushash (Boghazkoy) near a bend in the Halys river.
It is famous firstly for its rich 'royal' tombs which are pre-Hittite and contain metal-work and jewellery of a high standard.
The town was fortified in typical Hittite style, including an impressive gate with carved sphinx to ward off evil, a ring-wall with towers and a large building that could be palace or temple.
The town was destroyed at about the same time as Hattushash around 1200 BC but still to be seen are beautiful sculptures of animal motifs, as well as religious and hunting scenes.
